Why Your Dog May Hate the Rain

Does Your Dog Hate Going Out in The Rain?

Many dogs don't like to go out in the rain. And some just flat out refuse to go outside when it is raining! But, if you think about it, us humans can be the same. We do not usually want to go outside and get wet. It makes us feel uncomfortable, cold, and pretty miserable. After years of domesticated living, it’s fair to say that our dogs are used to warm beds so it may come as no surprise that some prefer to avoid the rain where they can.

Why Do Some Dogs Hate Going Out in Rain?

  • Barometric pressure - Dogs are more sensitive to the changes in barometric pressure and this may be a reason for them to dislike the rain.
  • Breed - Some breeds are more sensitive to wet and cold weather. Examples are toy breeds, very short-haired breeds, or those with thin fur coats.
  • The sound of the rain - The sound of the rain can be overwhelming and scary to some dogs, making them feel anxious or stressed.
  • Following your example - Dogs really can take after their owners! So, if you hate the rain, your dog can pick up on this and follow your lead. They’ll see just how much you hate getting wet, and think that they should hate it, too.

What To Do If Your Dog Hates Rain

Lead By Example - Try not to avoid wet dog walks - even though this may be very tempting to you! Instead, make sure your dog is exposed to all kinds of weather so they can get used to all the elements.

Use a Dog Raincoat - A raincoat will protect your dog from getting wet. Our Snoot Style Dog Raincoats are easy to get on and off and lightweight so your dog can still move freely. Plus, they have full coverage through the chest and tummy, so your dog stays both dry and clean.

Start With Short Walks - Get your dog used to going out in the rain with short walks first. You can gradually build up the duration as he becomes used to it.

Use Positive Reinforcement - Reward your dog with treats or a favourite toy and lots of praise when they go out in the rain. Don't force them to walk by dragging them on the lead or scold them for not wanting to go.

Make It Fun - Allow them to sniff and stop more.  The moisture makes all the smells much stronger, and your dog has a much more powerful sense of smell than you do. You can also play games at the park to make the experience more enjoyable.

Dry Them Off - Don't ruin all that positive reinforcement by scolding them for getting muddy paws on the floor when you get home. Or leave them feeling damp and cold. Use a towel to rub them down - Our Snoot Style Dog Towel is lightweight but super absorbent with a handy hanging loop so you can leave it at the back door.  it's also a great way to get them used to having their feet handled.

Remember, never force your dog to go outside in the rain if they are showing signs of fear or discomfort. It's important to make the training experience as positive and stress-free as possible for your dog.
