What is International Dog Day?
What is International Dog Day?
International Dog Day is celebrated on August 26th each year, and is a day dedicated to honouring our loyal canine companions. The aim of this day is to raise awareness about the number of dogs that are currently in rescue centres and encourage their adoption.
But it is also an opportunity to take time to appreciate the love and value that dogs bring to our daily lives.
Who Started International Dog Day?
International Dog Day was founded in the US in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a renowned pet and family lifestyle expert. August 26th marks the date she adopted her first family dog Sheltie. Colleen wanted to raise awareness of dogs in rescue centres, regardless of their age or breed, and encourage all dog lovers to show our dogs how much we love them.
- Celebrate the Bond Between Dogs and Humans: Acknowledge the special connection we share with our dogs and the positive impact they have on our lives.
- Raise Awareness About Dog Adoption: Encourage people to adopt dogs from shelters and rescue organizations.
- Promote Responsible Dog Care: Highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership and proper care.
How Can We Celebrate International Dog Day?
We’ve put together a few ways you and your dog can celebrate International Dog Day.
- Pamper Your Pup: Treat your dog to a day of special attention. Whether it’s a new toy, a homemade treat, or a favourite walk, make them feel extra loved and appreciated.
- Share the Love: Celebrate your dog on social media. Share your photos and stories using the hashtag #InternationalDogDay to join the global celebration.
- Adopt or Foster: Consider adopting or fostering a dog in need. Thousands of dogs are surrendered to pounds and shelters each year and adopting means you can give them a second chance for a long and happy life in a loving home.
- Support Local Rescue Groups and Shelters: Donate to or volunteer at a local animal shelter. Your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of dogs waiting for their forever homes.
International Dog Day is a wonderful chance to celebrate the joy our dogs bring into our lives and to make a positive impact on the lives of other dogs in need. We hope you join us in honouring all dogs and making this day special for them.
Share your stories and photos with us on social media using the hashtag #snootstyle, and let’s spread the love for our amazing dogs.
