How We Design a Snoot Style Dog Coat

How We Create a Snoot Style Design 🎨🐾

Ever wondered what goes into making a truly great quality dog coat? At Snoot Style, every design starts the same way — with a problem worth solving.

Maybe it's a coat that slips. A design that leaves your dog cold where it matters most. A fabric that pills after two washes. Whatever it is, we start by asking: how do we do this better?

That question drives everything. And the process of answering it? It's more involved than you might think.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how a Snoot Style dog coat design comes to life — from first idea to your dog's back.

1. It Starts with a Sketch ✏️

Designing a Dog Coat.

Every design begins as an idea — and the first thing our founder Katy does is sketch it out.

With over 25 years in the fashion industry, she brings a trained eye to every line and seam. The silhouette, the coverage, the way the coat will sit on a dog's body — all of it is considered from the very beginning.

Nothing is arbitrary. Everything has a reason.

2. Creating the Pattern 📐

Once the sketch is refined, it needs to become a pattern — and this is where dog coat design meets precision.

Pattern-making is the technical heart of the process. Part art, part mathematics. At Snoot Style we use a combination of paper and digital patterns, refining and adjusting until every proportion is exactly right.

It takes time. But getting this stage right makes everything else possible.

3. Developing the Print & Colour 🎨

Our prints are created exclusively for us by a graphic designer — you won't find them anywhere else.

Colour is selected using a Pantone book, because colour is deeply personal — and it behaves differently depending on the fabric it's applied to. We want what you see online to be exactly what arrives at your door.

4. Working With Our Suppliers 🤝

Once we have our pattern, print and colour palette locked in, everything goes to our supplier.

They create lab-dip swatches — small test samples of fabric, threads, zips and trims — so we can verify every component matches our specifications. Only once we've approved every detail does production begin.

5. Fabric Made to Order 🧵

All of our fabrics are made exclusively for Snoot Style — produced to order, just for us. This is part of what makes our sustainable dog apparel different — we only make what we need, reducing waste from the very start.

This process takes around four weeks. And while it's underway, we receive a first sample so we can start assessing the most important part of all — the fit.

6. The Fit — Our Obsession 🐶

This is where we spend the most time, and for good reason.

Even two dogs of the same breed can have completely different bodies. Getting the dog coat fit right is everything. So we fit our samples carefully and rigorously:

  • Watching how the dog moves in the coat
  • Checking coverage through the chest and tummy
  • Adjusting until it sits exactly as it should

Freedom of movement and genuine comfort are non-negotiable. Every item is also machine washed as part of testing — because a coat that loses its shape after one wash simply isn't good enough.

Worth Every Step

Bringing a new Snoot Style design to life is a long process. But it's one we'd never shortcut.

Whether it's our beloved Floofy Fleece or our dog raincoat collection, every single design goes through the same rigorous process — because the dogs wearing our coats, and the people who love them, deserve better than an afterthought.

Every detail is intentional. Every decision is made with your dog's comfort, warmth and style in mind.

That's always been the point. And it always will be. 🐾
