Beach clean up

Beach Clean Up Day

After re-scheduling several times due to Covid lockdown restrictions we were finally able to hold our beach clean-up event. Thanks so much to everyone who turned up to take part. Not only was it great fun, but very rewarding to be making a positive impact on or environment.

Our event was partnered with Clean Up Australia, who inspire and empower communities to clean up, fix up and conserve the environment.

It is hard to believe that this initiative began as the inspiration of one man, Ian Kiernan. An avid sailor, Ian was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered in the oceans of the world. Taking matters into his own hands, Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends, including co-founder Kim McKay AO.

This simple idea ignited an enthusiasm and desire among the local community to get involved and make a difference. And surely if a capital city could be mobilised into action, then so could the whole nation! And so it was that Clean Up Australia Day was born in 1990.

Since then, 19 million Australians have donated their time as part of Clean Up Australia activities and 38.5 million hours of volunteer time has been spent in clean-up activities to benefit our environment.

Our day began at the Elwood Pier in Victoria. We were delighted that both humans and doggies turned up to take part. Doggy bags were supplied for all the doggies on the day, and as the beach is dog friendly, they also had a great day out.

Our team collected several bags of rubbish from the beach in only an hour and a half, which was a huge effort. We will be doing more of these events in the future in locations around Melbourne.

And we encourage you all to focus on preventing rubbish entering our environment as well as removing what has already accumulated.
